The Adirondack Chair

Origins of the Adirondack Style

The Adirondack style originated in Westport, New York, around the turn of the century, when the "Westport chair" made its first appearance.  It was very similar to the modern Adirondack chair, except that the back and seat were usually made from single pieces of very wide and clear hemlock or basswood.  These chairs became very popular along the East Coast, with many different models cropping up.  Because of deforestation, however, the wide boards in the Westport-style furniture became hard to obtain.  So designers came up with versions of the chair that featured narrower back and seat slats, and the prototype for the Adirondack chair, as we know it today, was born.

Our Process

Steel City Cedar's chairs are made one at a time from Alabama Eastern Red Cedar. These fully assembled, classic Adirondack-style designs will provide maximum seating comfort for years of enjoyment on a porch or lawn.

Steel City Cedar's top-selling Adirondack Chair features a sculpted seat, and curved back slats for maximum comfort! It is made entirely out of full one inch Alabama Eastern Red Cedar. Chair parts are held firmly in place using 1 3/4" stainless steel fasteners plus special, elasticized polyurethane adhesive, to keep the chair rigid, even when put through temperatures ranging from -40 to 120 degrees

Alabama Eastern Red Cedar is light, the resin is poisonous to insects, and the species features an extremely high thermal factor. Alabama Eastern Red Cedar has 80% of the tensile strength of Oak, and is pound-for-pound stronger than steel!

Steel City Cedar's choice of Alabama Eastern Red Cedar combined with our meticulous construction method will surely produce treasured family heirlooms to be passed on from generation to generation.
